Enzymes are the gentlest way to exfoliate and they are badly underrated. They work on the protein holding dead cells together rather than dissolving anything or scrubbing at it. For someone who has tried an acid and reacted, or who has been scrubbing at their face for years, this is the way back into exfoliation without a fight.

Key actives
| Active | What it does | Why we use it |
|---|---|---|
| Papain | A papaya-derived enzyme that loosens dead cells at the surface rather than dissolving the bonds the way an acid does. | A different mechanism to an acid, and a gentler one, which is why sensitive skin tolerates it. |
| Five-fruit acid blend | Gentle exfoliating acids from bilberry, lemon, orange, sugar cane and sugar maple. | Low-strength fruit acids alongside the enzyme broaden the effect without raising the irritation. |
| Nopal cactus extractHydrolyzed Opuntia Ficus-Indica Flower Extract | A cactus extract that supports exfoliation without any physical friction. | Friction is what irritates reactive skin. Removing it is the point of the whole formula. |

Common questions
An acid loosens the bonds between dead surface cells chemically. An enzyme breaks down the protein holding them instead. The result looks similar and the route is gentler, which is why enzyme exfoliation suits skin that stings on an acid.
For surface texture and dullness, yes, used three times a week. It will not do what a peel does and it is not meant to. What it will do is let sensitive skin exfoliate at all, which for a lot of people is the difference between something and nothing.
It is free of artificial fragrance, but it carries grapefruit peel oil as a naturally occurring aromatic. If citrus oils irritate you, patch-test behind the ear first, or use the Soothing Gel Mask, which is fragrance-free.
On different days while you settle in. Mask three times a week, retinol on the nights between. If your skin stays comfortable after a month or two, the two coexist fine, but there is no need to rush it.
