Barrier Balm is a rich occlusive moisturiser with ceramides, peptides, and plant-based squalane to deeply restore the skin's moisture barrier, calm sensitivity, and protect compromised or post-treatment skin. Part of the Glo Skin Beauty Calm + Soothe range, distributed in the UK and Ireland by Glo Skin Beauty UK & Ireland.

What It Does

Dry, compromised, or post-procedure skin is immediately soothed and deeply cushioned. The skin's barrier is progressively restored, flakiness diminishes, reactive sensitivity reduces, and the skin feels more resilient and comfortable with regular use. Barrier Balm provides an occlusive layer that locks in hydration and other treatments beneath it, making it the ideal final step in any intensive repair or recovery routine.

Key Actives

Ceramides are skin-identical lipids that are essential to the skin's natural barrier structure. Replenishing ceramides externally helps restore barrier function, reduce transepidermal water loss, and calm the sensations associated with a compromised barrier, dryness, tightness, and reactivity. Peptides signal the skin to support healthy cell renewal and help improve the appearance of fine lines over time. Plant-based squalane is an emollient that mimics the skin's own natural oils, locking moisture in and providing a deeply nourishing, non-occlusive layer within this formula. Contains natural fragrance.

Who It Suits

Suitable for all skin types. Particularly well suited to dry, compromised, or post-treatment skin. Use as the final step in your PM routine, or as a targeted barrier repair treatment. Apply to face and neck. Pea-sized amount.

Key Benefits

  • Ceramides replenish the skin's natural barrier structure, reducing transepidermal water loss and calming dryness, tightness, and sensitivity.
  • Peptides signal the skin to support cell renewal and help improve the appearance of fine lines.
  • Plant-based squalane provides a deeply nourishing, skin-compatible emollient layer.
  • Ideal as the final PM step in any intensive repair or post-treatment routine, occlusive finish seals in hydration and the treatments beneath.
  • Suitable for post-treatment use, supports barrier recovery after professional clinic procedures.

How to Use

  1. Apply as the final step of your PM skincare routine, after serum and moisturiser.
  2. Use a pea-sized amount, applying to face and neck.
  3. For intensive repair, use nightly until the barrier is restored. For maintenance, use 2–3 times per week as needed.
  4. May also be used as a targeted treatment on dry patches, post-procedure skin, or anywhere the barrier is compromised.

Petrolatum has the best evidence of anything for reducing water loss through the skin, and it has an undeserved bad reputation. When a barrier is broken, the priority is to seal it and stop, not to treat it with more actives. This is what I send people home with after a peel, and it is what I would reach for on any skin that is flaking and sore.

Concern / context
A good fit
Better to wait or ask
Compromised or broken barrier
✓ Yes · petrolatum seals better than anything else
Dry, flaking patches

Recovery after treatment
✓ Yes · what we send people home with
Over-exfoliated skin
✓ Yes · stop the actives, use this, wait
Oily or congestion-prone skin

Key actives

Active What it does Why we use it
PetrolatumPetrolatum An occlusive that forms a physical seal, cutting water loss through the skin. It is first on the list, and it is the ingredient doing most of the work here. Nothing outperforms it for sealing.
Bisabolol with niacinamideBisabolol, Niacinamide A calming component of chamomile alongside niacinamide, which supports barrier comfort. Sealing alone leaves the discomfort. These are what settle it.
Rosehip oil with squalaneRosa Canina (Rose Hip) Fruit Oil, Squalane Two conditioning oils, one botanical and one that matches the skin's own. They soften the balm and condition underneath the seal rather than sitting inertly on top.

Results take time

Overnight
Tightness and stinging settle by morning, often after one use.
Days 3 to 5
••
Flaking reduces and the skin stops feeling raw.
Week 2 to 3
•••
The barrier holds on its own and you can start reintroducing actives.
If it does not settle
Assess
A barrier that will not recover in three weeks of doing nothing to it needs looking at. Come in rather than adding more products.

Guidance based on consistent use paired with daily SPF. Individual results vary. Not a substitute for a clinical assessment.

Pairs with: everything, as the final step. Serum and moisturiser first, this over the topWorth knowing: this carries geraniol, limonene and linalool, so it is not fragrance-free. It goes last, over your moisturiser, because nothing gets through it once it is on
